Bronze Portraits ›› Working Methods

  • First appointment to discuss pose, mount, etc.  Gather information by all means, including measurements and photography.  Initial payment.
  • Model and carve head in clay, usually over a two week period.
  • Confirm the clay head with client.  Second payment.
  • Transport the head to foundry.
  • The foundry to make moulds and wax positive.
  • Travel to the foundry and adjust and confirm wax if required.
  • Foundry to undertake all aspects of casting, make good, and prepare for patination.
  • Travel to foundry, supervise patination and mounting.  Return portrait to studio for collection or shipping.
  • Final payment upon collection.
  • Time between initial appointment and completion is dependent on the foundry, but probably two or three months.
